Black Star pilots a public Java compiler.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 1995--Black Star Publishing Co. Inc. is prototyping the World Wide Web's first public Java compiler.

Access will be restricted during its pilot operation, but once it goes public, it will be accessible, free, to any platform with a forms-capable Web browser.

``Many people have Java-capable Web browsers, but no Java compilers,'' notes Black Star Vice President John Chapnick. ``This new development essentially lets them do their compiling on our machines.''

The process is simple: a Web page offers a ``form'' (input area) for entering the Java (source code) ``script.'' (Many users can take advantage of cut-and-paste features; Netscape 2.0 users may also take advantage of its file upload Transmitting a file from your computer to another computer. "File upload" is essentially the same term as "upload," because most of the time data are transmitted as a structural unit known as a "file." abilities.) On completion, an on-screen ``button'' submits the script to a Black Star Sun-platform Java-C compiler, which produces Java byte code See bytecode., ready for downloading.

At first, there will be a limit of one compilation per site visit, and operations will be limited to Netscape-compatible ``applets'' (small applications).
