Open Source Software Industry Leaders to Debate the Merits of Landmark Agreement at Open Source Business Conference

Mr. Levin, who is highly regarded throughout the IT industry as an expert on software development and intellectual property (IP) issues, will moderate a lively discussion among representatives from Novell and Microsoft, leaders of the open source community and enterprise Linux customers. The discussion will address the impact of the landmark agreement between Microsoft and Novell, in which the two companies agreed to collaborate to improve interoperability between Windows and SUSE Linux A Linux distribution from the SuSE Linux division of Novell. Both consumer and enterprise versions are available, and the distribution includes several user interfaces. SuSE Linux comes with the Yet Another Setup Tool (YaST), which is used to install, configure and maintain the OS, as  Enterprise.

As part of the deal - which included Microsoft purchasing certificates for SUSE Linux Enterprise maintenance support subscriptions and creating a joint sales and marketing team - the two companies also signed an agreement in which they promised not to sue each other's customers for patent infringement patent infringement n. the manufacture and/or use of an invention or improvement for which someone else owns a patent issued by the government, without obtaining permission of the owner of the patent by contract, license or waiver. . While Microsoft has sold more than 40,000 certificates for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) is a Linux distribution supplied by Novell, targeted at the business market. It is targeted for servers, but can be installed on Desktop computers for testing as well. New versions are released at an interval of 18-24 months. , the intellectual property component of the deal has been very controversial in the open source community.
