DENI Caunt, a former Mayoress of Dudley, has died after a short illness. The 64-year-old grandmother, wife of Dudley Council leader David Caunt, died in the Georgina Unit at Russells Hall Hospital, where she was being treated for a recurrence of cancer. She had a daughter, Tina, and grandchildren Victoria, aged 18, and Hannah, 16. Mrs Caunt was a well-known figure in Dudley borough and particularly in Gornal, where she was a district nurse for 26 years until retiring in 1998. Born in Ipswich, she was educated at Northgate Grammar School, where she first met David Caunt. She trained to be a nurse at The Royal London Hospital The Royal London Hospital, formerly the London Hospital, founded in 1740, is a major teaching hospital in Whitechapel, London. It is part of the Barts and the London NHS Trust, alongside St Bartholomew's Hospital ("Barts"), located approximately two miles away. and in 1962 moved to the Leicester Royal Infirmary The Leicester Royal Infirmary is a large National Health Service hospital in Leicester, England. It is located to the south-west of the city centre. It has Leicester's accident and emergency department, and is part of the University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust. . The couple married that year and moved to live in Gornal in 1963. Coun Caunt (Con, Sedgley) said: "Deni will be remembered by many people for many different reasons. "As well as being a wonderful wife and mother she was a proud grandmother and celebrated our granddaughters' excellent A-level and GCSE GCSE 1. (in Britain) General Certificate of Secondary Education; an examination in specified subjects which replaced the GCE O level and CSE 2. "She made a difference to numerous people through her work as a district nurse in the local community and her legacy will live on through the thousands of lives she touched." After retiring from nursing Mrs Caunt became a governor at Red Hall Primary School and supported Coun Caunt in his work as a councillor and in his love of canals. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 13 at St James the Great Church, in Lower Gornal, at 11.45am.
