Black Country News: January date for ward by-election; GREAT BARR.A BY-ELECTION is to be held in the New Year following the death of a long-serving Sandwell councillor. Former Lib-Dem leader Coun Martyn Smith, who represented the Newton ward at Great Barr Coordinates: Great Barr is a large and loosely-defined area which straddles the boundaries of Birmingham, West Bromwich (Sandwell; including the Great Barr with Yew Tree Ward) and Walsall, West Midlands, England. , died on October 8, with his wife, former Sandwell Mayor Coun Mrs Sadie Smith, at his bedside. Coun Smith, who was 61, had been suffering from cancer. Sandwell Council chiefs confirmed today that a by-election for Newton ward would be held on January 24. No nominations have yet been received. Coun Smith was the first Liberal to be elected to Sandwell Council in 1980. He was joined on the local authority by his wife two years later.
