The Ouessant takes its name from a French-owned island, also known as Ushant, in the Atlantic off the western coast of Brittany.

The sheep - pictured with zoo keeper Sophie Cousins - have an average shoulder height of just 50cm (20in).

Curator Derek Grove said it was widely believed the Ouessant breed descended from a Viking species carried on board ships and left in conquered lands.

Ouessants were saved from extinction extinction, in biology, disappearance of species of living organisms. Extinction occurs as a result of changed conditions to which the species is not suited.  in the early 1900s by French aristocrats who allowed them to graze near their chateaux.
