WORKERS and volunteers have been honoured for their efforts helping the award-winning charity Sandwell Sandwell is a metropolitan borough in the West Midlands of England. It is made up of the Black Country towns of Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich. Young Carers. Mayor Coun Sadie SADIE SYSCOM (Systems Command) Architecture Development and Integration Environment Smith presented certificates to the organisation's full-time and part-time staff as well as volunteers at the charity's annual achievements event. There were certificates for those who have successfully completed training in a range of subjects, including child care, health and social care, working with young people, first aid, and child protection awareness. Certificates were also presented to the charity's 11 volunteers, to acknowledge the contribution they make to both the management and day to day activities of Sandwell Young Carers. The registered charity was set up in 1994 and supports around 140 young people who live in Sandwell, whose health, education and social lives are affected as a result of caring for a dependent family member. Although a borough wide service, the organisation is based in West Bromwich West Bromwich (brŭm`ĭj, –ĭch, brŏm`wĭch), city (1991 pop. 146,386), Sandwell metropolitan district, W central England. in a three storey building which opened in 1999 as the first Young Carers' Centre in the country. The centre, which offers a safe and sensitive environment for young carers to take a break from caring, offers facilities for play and youth sessions, workshops, one to one and group support sessions. It also organises day trips and residential breaks. Chairman Frank Betteridge, who has been a volunteer since the organisation began, said: "I am delighted to be present at the event, receiving my certificate and joining colleagues in celebrating their achievements for training." |
