Hirokazu Kanazawa was a close disciple of Gichin Funakoshi Gichin Funakoshi (船越 義珍 Funakoshi Gichin, November 10 1868 – April 26 1957) was one of the Okinawan karate masters who introduced karate to the Japanese mainland in 1921. He founded the Shōtōkan-ryū style of karate. , considered by many to the founding father of the Shotokan school of karate. Kanazawa founded the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation Shotokan Karate-do International Federation (SKIF) is the largest shotokan karate organisation in the world, with in excess of two and a half million members worldwide, in one hundred and twenty countries.  in 1979, an organization that now has branches in more than 90 countries.
