When the images were first printed they were heavily cropped, either by Weegee himself, or by the editors who used them for their newspapers. This meant the full frame was often lost and so they were printed again in the early 1980s by Sid Kaplan, to capture them in their full glory. In 1980, Kaplan and Weegee's widow, Wilma Wilcox, joined forces to create the Weegee Portfolio Inc. Together, they set out to create an exclusive collection of photographic prints from Weegee's full negatives. Whilst the Portfolio was being printed in New York, Side Gallery organised the first UK tour of Weegee's work. The gallery developed a good relationship with Mrs Wilcox and came to her rescue when there was a flood at a New York storage facility where Weegee's work was being held. When she died, all of Weegee's work being stored in Newcastle was left to the gallery in her will. The exhibition is running until December 20. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm. To find out more log on to www.amberonline.com or call (0191) 232 2208.
