A 23-year old US Army officer, Stone (1842-97) was sent to South Carolina to work in an agency of the Reconstruction effort at the end of the Civil War. His account of what he saw and accomplished there--neither a dairy nor an official report but a personal summary--reveals much about the motivation and implementation of the postwar program. It is edited here by his great granddaughter Suzanne Stone Johnson, a retired school teacher and newspaper editor, and Robert Allison Johnson, who has written a historical novel based on Stone's life.
