"This release has an international flavor to it, continuing our drive to feature designers worldwide. We're premiering fonts from new typographers to the NFC as well as our tried and true veterans," explained Jim Lyles, director of Typographic See typography.  Development at Bitstream. "All fonts are available in OpenType versions, continuing our commitment to the font format of the future. I'm very excited about the designs in this collection. Allen Zuk's Kooky lives up to its name, with characters that jump above and below the baseline. Similarly, Wavy Rounded, a hip display font Same as screen font.  from Hajime Kawakami, creates fun visual waves. Of course we have classic releases, too. A family consisting of a light and bold weight, Oleg Karpinsky's Irakly conveys an unfamiliar elegance. Ecliptica from Robert Bell is a family of five fonts that work well with one another. And what would an NFC release be without the far-out renderings of Ray Cruz and Thomas Oldfield? Ray's fonts -- Fat Albert Regular, Outline and Shadow -- are bold poster types that evoke the fun and funk of an era gone by. And Thomas' Hombre is a font with a lot of character that evokes the American Wild West. Giddy up! The NFC continues to thrive on the inspired works of these and other veteran designers and to seek new designers from across the globe."

and a Cursive that can be used with any of the other three styles. As an added bonus, Bell also designed a modern Blackletter companion. The Ecliptica family is an unusual layout of styles and all work equally well with one another. The OpenType versions of the Ecliptica fonts support an extended Latin character set that includes a full array of fractions as well as "f" ligatures. The Sans and Cursive fonts contain some cap and lowercase alternates. Bell is a prolific designer. This is the first of several typeface families by Bell that will be published by Bitstream.

Ray Cruz releases another typeface family, this time inspired by 1970s pop culture. Fat Albert Regular, Outline and Shadow are bold poster types that evoke the fun and funk of an era gone by. You can easily tell that Cruz has spent his early design years in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

The OpenType versions have alternates that are more conservative in design and broaden the usefulness of the typefaces.

There is a handful of alternate characters including an old style figure set in the OpenType version. Kawakami is passionate about Latin typeface design. In 1990, he was awarded an Honorable Mention in the prestigious Morisawa International Design Competition.

Thomas Oldfield of the United Kingdom dreams of the American Old West. Since he is so far removed from it in both time and space, he created this font to pacify pac·i·fy

A newcomer to Bitstream's stable of designers, Canadian Allen Zuk offers up his new typeface, Kooky. Living and working in London since 2000, Zuk wanted to create a typeface that evoked imperfection im·per·fec·tion

About the New Font Collection (NFC)

Bitstream announced the New Font Collection (NFC) program in August of 2000. The current Bitstream Typeface Library has been a mainstay of the graphic design community for 20 years. Bitstream felt the time had come to begin a new collection of typefaces, not only to add fonts to the library but, more importantly, to seek out designs from both new and established designers. To pursue those goals, Bitstream established the New Font Collection program.
