: BITS) announced today that it is releasing Iowan Old Style(TM): The Complete Family. This new product is a collection of typeface designer John Downer's complete family. It features 25 typefaces in all, including both a titling font and 12 expert sets previously released by the New Font Collection.

This compilation also features an autographed copy of the Iowan Old Style typeface specimen book, published in 2001. A limited number of copies are available.

All the fonts will be available in PostScript Type 1 and TrueType formats for both Windows and the Macintosh.

Bitstream Iowan Old Style, originally published in 1991, is John Downer's debut text family. Classified as a Venetian old style, Iowan Old Style is modeled after earlier, 20th century American revivals of Italian Renaissance types cut by Nicolas Jenson and Francesco Griffo Francesco Griffo (1450- 1518), also called Francesco da Bologna, was a fifteenth-century Venetian punchcutter. He worked for Aldus Manutius, designing that printer's more important typefaces, including the first italic type. , but features a larger x-height, tighter letterfit and reproportioned capitals. It was also inspired by classical inscriptional lettering as well as sign painting seen in certain regions of eastern Iowa, Downer's current stomping ground stompĀ·ing ground

The latest addition, Iowan Old Style Titling, was designed in 2001 by John Downer and added to the family in 2002. The cap-only character set, which includes additional ornaments and fleurons, broadens the appeal and functionality of the typeface family A group of typefaces that includes the normal, bold, italic and bold-italic variations of the same design. .

The Iowan Old Style family was designed for and is well suited for extended use in book text setting.

About the Designer

John Downer began training as a sign painter while he was in high school. He finished his apprenticeship after college, and then started graduate studies in art at The University of Iowa Not to be confused with Iowa State University.
The first faculty offered instruction at the University in March 1855 to students in the Old Mechanics Building, situated where Seashore Hall is now. In September 1855, the student body numbered 124, of which, 41 were women.
