Bishops order ICEL to redo translation. (United States).


Washington--On November 15, the U.S. bishops sent an English translation of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) - in the Latin original, Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani (IGMR) - is the detailed document governing the celebration of Mass of the ordinary form of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, and is printed at the start of  back to the translators, because the translation was not consistently in accord with the new instructions on the liturgy as expressed in Liturgiam authenticam (see C.I., Nov. '01, pp. 33-34). The bishops voted 1358 to remand To send back.

A higher court may remand a case to a lower court so that the lower court will take a certain action ordered by the higher court. A prisoner who is remanded into custody is sent back to prison subsequent to a Preliminary Hearing before a tribunal or magistrate

, the body formed by English-speaking bishops' conferences to develop common English texts from Latin liturgical documents. Evidently the American bishops are taking the new liturgical norms seriously.
