A group of 40 influential conservative Catholics met with five U.S. bishops in Washington Washington, town, England

, former spokesman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, took place after a group of liberal Catholics met in July with some of the same bishops--including Wilton Gregory, president of U.S. bishops' conference--the Washington Post reported.

Although none of the bishops spoke to reporters after the session, Hudson said the meeting was "very positive."

"We said it weakens their leadership when they fail to clearly define and defend the teaching of the church," Hudson said, "and we urged them to defend that teaching."
