It is the biggest life-insurer in the UK, and has a strong position in motor insurance. It is part of the Aviva group, itself created by a merger of Norwich Union and CGU plc in 2000. Community Sports Fund is up and running for another year, giving the public the chance to make a difference to sport in their community. Anyone can vote for a local sporting initiative which could help them win funding of up to pounds 50,000 and all you have to do is register your vote on www.joinourteam.com. As the team behind UK Athletics UK Athletics is the governing body for the sport of athletics in the United Kingdom. UK Athletics was founded in 1999 as a successor to the British Athletics Federation, which had collapsed for financial reasons. , Norwich Union is committed to supporting athletics from playground to podium and has created the Community Sports Fund to make it easier for local sporting initiatives to reach their full potential and for the next generation to get active. Up to pounds 500.000 has been made available by Norwich Union to be distributed between over 200 grassroots sporting initiatives nationwide. In October, 2007 the Birtley club formed a community partnership with Lord Lawson of Beamish school and was soon recognised as an award-winning partnership by England Athletics. Birtley AC have been offered eight hectares of land adjacent to the school by Gateshead Council to develop a fully-functional athletics facility aimed at providing children with access to great facilities, equipment and coaching. The Birtley athletics club is one of 14 specially selected initiatives involved in the scheme across the region and one of over 200 nationwide. It can be described as "greater Teesside" and consists of the four unitary authorities created by the breakup of the County of Cleveland in 1996: Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland, and Stockton-On-Tees along with 'Experience Extreme'; West Tyne Girls' Games; Ashington 'Aim High Climbers'; Sharks Wheelchair Basketball Club; Sedgefield Girls Active Project; Blakeston 'Get Up And Go Club'; Derwentside Athletics Scheme; Haydon Bridge Girls Active; Alnwick Cricket Club and Chester-le-Street Girls Active.
