Birthplace of National ``Arts Alive'' Banner Program Celebrates 6th Anniversary; Encinitas/Cardiff Art on Display along Historic Highway 101.ENCINITAS, Calif. -- The 101 Artists' Colony, in conjunction with the Downtown Encinitas MainStreet MainStreet was a department store chain based in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Operating for only five years, the chain's stores were located in the states of Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota. Sixty-six local artists painted banners -- all original pieces of artwork -- that are now on display on lamp posts along Highway 101 in both Encinitas and Cardiff. Originally conceived in Encinitas in 2000, this innovative program has been picked up by dozens of communities across the country. On July 23rd, 2 p.m, at the former Redsand Building (687 Coast Hwy in Encinitas), a special community event will be held to auction off these one-of-a-kind banners.
