SCOUTS and Guides came together to celebrate their 80th anniversary.

More than 100 people attended Dipton Scout and Guide birthday celebrations at Tanfield Railway The Tanfield Railway is a tourist attraction in County Durham, England, operating preserved steam and diesel industrial locomotives. The Railway operates a passenger service on Sunday's all year round. , in Sunniside, Gateshead Sunniside is a Large Village in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead just south of Whickham, Sunniside is at one end of the Tanfield Railway. It has a large park and also a busy Front Street with a collection of shops and amenities and it is surrounded mainly by farmland but also .

Members from the group clambered on the trains and looked around the oldest existing railway in the world and shared their fondness of the Scout and Guide movements.

Tom Ashcroft, who has been in the Scouts since he was 14 and a Scout leader for 49 years, said everyone had a lot of fun.

"It was very windy and it did lash down with rain in the morning but despite the weather lots of people came to mark the special day," he said.

"It was very special to have everyone here together, from Rainbow, Beavers, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts and Guides.

"Everyone really enjoyed spending the day at Tanfield and taking the train.

"We are always keen to recruit more youngsters and Scout leaders, so if anyone wants to take part please get in touch." Dipton Scout and Guide group, which is based in the Black Bull Inn, in Dipton, Stanley, County Durham Coordinates:

Now the group has up to 100 including Guides and Beavers.

Tom added: "The Scouts have changed a great deal since they were first started. We have grown with the times, for example now there is a computer badge. But all the members still learn how to look after themselves and sleep in tents."
