The original building (in Millbank on the former site of Millbank Prison), with a collection of 65 modern British paintings, was given by Sir Henry Tate and was opened in 1897. is celebrating 20 years in Liverpool with special events during the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. And Alexei Sayle Alexei David Sayle (born 7 August 1952, Anfield, Liverpool) is an English comedian, actor and author. He was a central part of the alternative comedy circuit in the early Eighties. will be among those leading the celebrations for a variety of free and ticket-only activities from May 3 to 5. On the Saturday, artist Graham Marsden will be enlisting helpers as he builds a maze of colourful dens to transform the ground floor gallery. Liverpool Lantern Company and Young Tate come together to encourage visitors to try their hand at making colourful lanterns that will be paraded through the gallery. Grown-ups will also be catered for, with events that bring together art, comedy, music and photography. Comedians such as Alexei Sayle and Brendan Riley will lead "giggle tours" of the Tate collection with a different comedian leading the tour each day. Artists that have worked with Tate Liverpool Tate Liverpool is an art gallery and museum in Liverpool, Merseyside, England, and part of Tate, along with Tate St Ives, Cornwall, Tate Britain, London, and Tate Modern, London. The museum was an initiative of the Merseyside Development Corporation. in the last 20 years will be returning to reflect on their experiences and the role the gallery played in their artistic careers.
