Award-winning SH Structures won the battle to build the huge central mast and the circular and egg-shaped rings holding the net.

Skilled welders and platers at the firm's huge Sherburn-in-Elmet factory have worked skillfully to ensure it is millimetre perfect. Contracts manager Dave Perry said: "It's not every day we work on something which is put on public display." He is proud of every one of the firm's 45 workers who are turning Temenos from a brilliant idea into stunning reality.

The scale of the tubes which make up the ring sections, to be welded together on site, is breathtaking.

Imagine the diameter of a hula hoop and welder Wayne Chapman at 5ft 7ins tall slipping easily inside. Imagine hoops 16 metres across made up of 30 metre lengths, weighing 23 tonnes each. Then there's the 56 tonnes of main mast which will take the strain as the structure is slung across the dock near the Riverside Stadium - to stand in all its glory.
