Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run train and an independent common carrier reported to be transporting steel products. The truck involved in the accident was not owned or operated by Birmingham Steel Corporation. A number of Birmingham Steel employees are assisting in rescue efforts at the accident site. Birmingham Steel operates in the mini-mill sector of the steel industry and conducts operations at facilities located across the United States.
