Birmingham Steel Corporation Announces Election of New Board Member.


BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1998--Birmingham Steel Corporation today announced that its board of directors has elected Alfred C. DeCrane, Jr. as a member of the board. Mr. DeCrane fills a vacant position on the Company's board of directors.

Mr. DeCrane, 67, is former chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Texaco Inc. Mr. DeCrane joined Texaco in 1959 and served in a variety of senior management positions until his retirement in 1996. He was elected to Texaco's board of directors in 1977 and was elected president in 1983, chairman of the board in 1987 and chief executive officer in 1993.

Mr. DeCrane also is a director of CIGNA CIGNA CG (Connecticut General Life Insurance Company) INA (Insurance Company of North America)  Corporation, Bestfoods, Corn Products International, the Harris Corporation Harris Corporation NYSE: HRS is an international communications equipment company that produces wireless equipment, electronic systems, and both terrestrial and spaceborne antennas for use in the government, defense, and commercial sectors.  and U.S. Global Leaders Growth Fund Ltd. In addition, he is the U.S. co-chairman of the U.S. Saudi Arabian Business Council, a member of the Morgan Stanley International advisory board and the board of trustees board of trustees Politics The posse of thugs who oversee an institution's administration.
