This public-private partnership is a first for the state of Alabama and nation and will be responsible for assisting Birmingham, Hoover, Jefferson County and surrounding municipalities with grant requests through the Alabama Green Initiative and lobbying for their passage in Washington D.C. and Montgomery. Initiative guidelines aim to reduce the region's carbon footprint via the establishment of a legal entity that will seek to identify and secure available federal dollars for green-only initiatives and stimulus grants that are designed to benefit the entire region.

AGI organizers site low emission vehicles, public works' projects and large-scale community structures utilizing green-building standards as examples of what programs will be targeted.
