Birim Goldfields announces new acquisition in Ghana.

MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 1996--Birim Goldfields Inc. (CANADIAN DEALING NETWORK:BIRM) is proud to announce that it has purchased a 50 percent participating interest in the former Akrokeri Mine, contiguous to the northeast and on strike with Ashanti Goldfields' Obuasi deposits in Ghana, West Africa.

This transaction was completed through the acquisition of the 50 percent interest held by Westcroft International Limited, the other 50 percent being held by Esmeralda Exploration Limited of Perth, Western Australia.

Supporting the property's gold potential is the fact that the 48 sq km Akrokeri concession has seen the production, between 1905-1909, of 75,000 ounces of gold from 104,000 tons of ore, representing an average grade of 0.72 oz/t.

The ore zone extends over 550 meters and consists of a 2-meter wide mineralized quartz vein. No assessment of the host rock nor of the oxide gold potential has been previously reported.

The most recent exploration work carried out on the property goes back to 1988 when soil sampling, trenching and a limited geophysical survey were completed. No diamond drilling was undertaken to follow up on this work in spite of the fact that several drill targets were established.

Birim Goldfields and Esmeralda Exploration will contribute equally to the US $500,000 work programme aimed at redefining diamond drill targets. The first phase of exploration activity is scheduled to be completed during the course of 1996 with interim results released in due course. Birim will act as operator during the exploration phase.
