Birim Goldfields Inc. is pleased to report that a 1200-metre diamond drilling program has begun on the Bui structural belt in west-central Ghana. This is on property acquired from Santa Fe Mining Inc. (now a unit of Newmont Gold Company). The target being tested is the Chenchu Prospect, one of several present on the 150 sq.km. Chenchu Prospecting License. Previous soil sampling, trenching and reverse circulation (RC) drilling conducted by Santa Fe outlined, on this prospect, a northeast- trending gold anomaly, 1100 metres long and 350 metres wide, corresponding to a 160-metre high topographic feature. The RC drilling revealed the presence of multiple and structurally complex gold-bearing zones contained within an altered sequence of ferruginous ferruginous /fer·ru·gi·nous/ (fe-roo´ji-nus) 1. containing iron or iron rust. 2. of the color of iron rust. fer·ru·gi·nous adj. 1. and siliceous siliceous relating to or made of silica or a silicate. sediments. Previous RC drilling returned the following results:
2.23 g/t Au over 5.0 metres
1.07 g/t Au over 4.0 metres
1.90 g/t Au over 13.0 metres
Several other gold prospects, some with visible gold, are known to occur on the Chenchu Prospecting License along a series of parallel and siliceous (chert chert: see flint. ?) shear zones which extend for a minimum of 8 km along strike. Detailed follow-up work, consisting of mapping, soil sampling and trenching, will be undertaken shortly on these mineralized min·er·al·ize v. min·er·al·ized, min·er·al·iz·ing, min·er·al·iz·es v.tr. 1. To convert to a mineral substance; petrify. 2. To transform a metal into a mineral by oxidation. 3. structures. Interpretation of these results will determine whether RC drilling or diamond drilling will be used to test the additional targets outlined. The Bui structural belt in Ghana stretches from the Cote d'Ivoire border on the west to the younger Voltaian rocks in the east. Birims' properties consist of two prospecting licenses, the Chenchu and Krachikrom permits, each covering 150 sq.km. and featuring rocks of the Birimian formation, and also a surrounding Reconnaisance License, covering 6,670 sq.km., which feature both the Birimian as well as the Tarkwaian formations.
