Birdwatching 101 Beginner's Guide to Bird Watching


The act of observing or studying birds is called birdwatching or birding. This act is either performed by the ordinary eyes or with the use of visual enhancement apparatus such as the binoculars. Most species of birds are easier noted and identified by the sense of hearing more than the sense of sight; therefore auditory component is involved in the act of birding.

A good number of those who watch birds do that for relaxation or social purposes. However, the Ornithologists engage in the act of birding with scientific approach and techniques.

Tips on BirdWatching

Attracting Backyard Birds: if you want to get the attention of backyard birds; you have to make the environment of the backyard very appealing and welcoming to this category of birds. The best way to achieve this is to plant shrubs and trees of various heights to give room to the various needs and preferences of different species of birds. You might need to visit the nearest local gardening center for recommendations on the types of plants that are bird-friendly. You have to be careful with inorganic plant tending; it can be repulsive to the birds and much more endanger their lives. It is good to apply caution when practicing birdwatching.

Attracting Birds Using Bird Baths: this is one of the means of getting birds very close so that you can take a better look at them. Bird Baths make clean and fresh water available for the birds. Birds are rarely privileged to have such necessities in such a palatable form. The best bird bath to use for attraction purpose should be the one with running water feature or the add-on unit. This feature will aid in repelling the breeding of insects' larvae and algae growth. There should also be provision for the heating up of the water in winter to keep the birds warm when they come bathing and drinking

Note that the water bath should just be a couple of inches deep; birds will not feel comfortable with water feature that is deep. It will be a good idea to incorporate rocks in the bath so that the birds will have a place to perch and flap their wings after a fresh bath; this will also serve as way of limiting the depth of the water bath. These tips are very essential when practicing birdwatching.

Bird Feeding: One of the great ways to attract birds is by providing them with food such as seeds. You also have to know how to present this feeds in order to get the attention of the birds. One of the options you have for feeding birds is the use of platform feeder. This device is a system that has the form of a tray; which is big enough to contain the different species and sizes of the backyard birds. When you fill this system with mixed seeds, all sorts of birds will be attracted to the feed.

Birdwatching is indeed a lot fun and you can succeed in your purpose of engaging in bird watching once you do the right thing. The basic needs of birds are water, food and shelter; you can use these things to attract backyard birds
