Dubliner Anderson gave up a career in information technology to become a guide and information officer at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin. Here he offers a complement to traditional bird identification guides, based on the notion that people's perception of and interaction with birds are part of custom and tradition and handed down in folklore, myth, and belief. They are also very local, he says, and he focuses on his native land. Most of the book is devoted to accounts of particular species. For each he considers appearance, behavior, habitat, history, myths, traditions, beliefs, culinary aspects, related place names, and alternative names among the various peoples and traditions that Ireland has hosted. Distributed in the US by Dufour Editions.
