Bird's-eye view for youngsters at event.


YOUNGSTERS were given the chance to get up close with Q the vulture vulture, common name for large birds of prey of temperate and tropical regions. The Old World vultures (family Accipitridae) are allied to hawks and eagles; the more ancient American vultures and condors are of a different family (Cathartidae) with distant links to  and Harris the Hawk at an event near Nuneaton.

Any member of the order Falconiformes (eagles, falcons, hawks, and vultures) or Strigiformes (owls). Falconiforms are also called raptors. They are active during the day, whereas owls are nocturnal.

They were given the chance to hold the owls, falcons, hawks and vulture during the event.

Under the watchful eye of Warwickshire falconer Jan Prymaka, the 15 children experienced how hawks are trained to hunt and had Q the vulture literally eating out of their hands.

As a souvenir of their day, the kids also had their photo taken with their favourite bird.

Mr Prymaka said: "The favourite bird seems to be the Piccolino, a white- faced Scops Owl, who supervises the class from his perch on the desk."

The next Bird of Prey experience event runs at Dobbies Garden Centre in Mancetter on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8.
