Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2000

Zhone Technologies today announced that Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) An organization offering local telephone service that is not one of the traditional telephone companies. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed competition to the incumbent telcos (ILECs), enabling new companies (CLECs) ) Birch Telecom is testing Zhone's Broadband Access Node (BAN(TM)) in an effort to offer its customers additional voice, data, and video services. A key component of Zhone's Single Line Multi-Service (SLMS SLMS Single Line Multi-Service (Zhone Technologies)

(TM)) architecture, BAN is the industry's first local-loop solution that integrates and provisions voice, data, and content services over multiple network media.

"At Zhone, we are able to provide carriers with a unified platform that delivers the applications and services customers demand," said Jeanette Symons, vice president and chief technology officer of Zhone Technologies. "The consolidated BAN platform enables carriers to diversify their service offerings and at the same time provision, manage, and deliver these services to customers in an increasingly efficient way."

"We've elected to trial the BAN because it will allow us for the first time to manage our network from one complete console, reducing costly truck rolls and network nightmares," said Jeff Kuenne, director of network planning for Birch. "With the BAN trial in effect, we're now looking forward to offering additional voice and data services to our small and mid-sized business customers in Kansas, Missouri, and Texas."

Expanding Services and Applications

Zhone's SLMS architecture allows service providers to connect copper, fiber, and coaxial physical loop plants through a single integrated infrastructure. The Zhone Management System (ZMS ZMS Zero Mechanical State (TM)) offers a single, consistent interface from which to diagnose, troubleshoot, provision, and bill across all services. The BAN plays a key role in the SLMS framework by consolidating the functionality of a voice gateway, a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) allows telephone lines to make faster connections to the Internet.
