Biovitrum and Syntonix Enter Agreement for the Joint Development and Commercialization of Recombinant Factor IX for the Treatment of Hemophilia.STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Biovitrum AB, Sweden, and Syntonix Pharmaceuticals, Inc., USA, have entered into a co-development and commercialization agreement for Syntonix' long-acting, recombinant Factor IX product for Hemophilia B hemophilia B n. A clotting disorder of blood resembling hemophilia A, caused by hereditary deficiency of factor IX. Also called Christmas disease. ("FIX:Fc"). Under the terms of the agreement, Syntonix receives an initial collaboration fee and Biovitrum makes an equity investment in Syntonix. Biovitrum and Syntonix will jointly develop and commercialize FIX:Fc. Syntonix is responsible for marketing in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. and Biovitrum is responsible for marketing in Europe, Russia and the Middle East. The companies will equally share the costs and profits for development and commercialization of FIX:Fc. Under the terms of the agreement, Syntonix will receive milestone payments and an additional equity investment from Biovitrum based on the progress of the program. In the future, Biovitrum and Syntonix may decide to expand the collaboration to include additional long-acting protein products. Additional financial terms will not be disclosed. There is an increasing trend toward use of Factor IX for prophylaxis prophylaxis (prō'fĭlăk`sĭs), measures designed to prevent the occurrence of disease or its dissemination. Some examples of prophylaxis are immunization against serious diseases such as smallpox or diphtheria; quarantine to confine treatment of Hemophilia B, which requires several infusions per week with the currently available drugs. The extended half-life of Syntonix' FIX:Fc product could enable effective treatment for both prophylaxis and on-demand therapy with less frequent intravenous injections and thereby provide a new, improved therapy for these patients. The total market potential for Factor IX products is estimated to be in excess of USD USD In currencies, this is the abbreviation for the U.S. Dollar. Notes: The currency market, also known as the Foreign Exchange market, is the largest financial market in the world, with a daily average volume of over US $1 trillion. $600 million worldwide, per year. "We are pleased to develop FIX:Fc with Syntonix because Syntonix' SynFusionTM technology has resulted in a very promising, long-acting recombinant Factor IX product that has the potential to reduce the frequency of infusions required for Hemophilia B patients to manage their disease. The signed agreement further consolidates our strength in the hemophilia hemophilia (hē'məfĭl`ēə,–fēl`yə), genetic disease in which the clotting ability of the blood is impaired and excessive bleeding results. therapeutic area where we have significant experience and interests," commented Mats Pettersson, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. About Hemophilia Hemophilia is a rare hereditary disorder in which the ability of patients' blood to clot is impaired. As a result, the patient suffers from excessive bleeding and uncontrolled internal bleeding For the death metal band, see . Internal bleeding is bleeding occurring inside the body. Causes It may be caused by high blood pressure (by causing blood vessel rupture) or other forms of injury, especially high speed deceleration occurring during an automobile , leading to pain and eventual permanent damage to joints and muscles. One form, Hemophilia B results from mutations that impair the production of Factor IX. It has been reported that even with "proper treatment" the life expectancy Life Expectancy 1. The remaining number of years an individual is expected to live, based on IRS issued life expectancy tables. of hemophilia patients is about 10 years less than for individuals without hemophilia. Increasingly, the normal mode of treatment for younger patients is a prophylaxis regimen where patients are infused two or three times per week to maintain a better circulating level of coagulation factor coagulation factor n. Long term studies in Sweden and elsewhere demonstrate that such regimens greatly reduce if not eliminate progressive joint deterioration.
