BBEI, founded in 1993 with start-up funds from Bayer Biotechnology, has designed and implemented a comprehensive high school and community college program, enabling students in participating schools to gain valuable work experience and to be exposed to special science classes that prepare them for both higher education higher education

and for the high-paying, technical jobs created as biotechnology-derived products (many of which are currently in research and development) become licensed and ready for full-scale production.

"Industry leaders have predicted a growing need for skilled technicians who are appropriately trained for these positions," explained Mary Alice Mary Alice Smith (born December 3, 1941 in Indianola, Mississippi, U.S.) is an Emmy Award and Tony Award winning actress. In 1987 she received a Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her work in Fences.  Rathbun, executive director of the organization.

Rathbun continued, "We are excited to be able to honor a prominent group of individuals who represent the industry, education, and the community." Guests at the dinner will include leaders of the biotech industry, city and school officials, students and parents. Corporate contributors include Bayer, Pfizer, Berlex, Chiron, LBNL LBNL Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley, CA)

, McKesson and others. BBEI is hoping to raise more than $60,000 for its programs through the dinner.

BBEI was honored recently as the "Pioneer Health Career Training Program" by Johnson & Johnson, at the Jobs for the Future Conference in Orlando, Fla., where the company spokesperson hailed BBEI as a model for education and industry partnerships.

BBEI receives funding from foundations, businesses and individuals. Its comprehensive program includes a specialized science curriculum for 11th and 12th graders and a science certificate at the community college level. It also includes laboratory-focused work experience for all participants, teacher training, job counseling preparation, and an unusually comprehensive range of support service for participating students.

"BBEI is unique in that it has worked in partnership to understand the coming needs and trends of the industry. It has shown that it can coordinate the efforts of both the schools and biotech companies... no easy task, given the inherent differences between the two entities," said Dr. Penhoet. "This is a rapidly changing industry, full of opportunities, and we need programs that encourage young people to consider careers in science."

Since 1993, BBEI has expanded from one school to three and from one industry partner to 35. Most significantly, more than 120 students are currently enrolled in the BBEI-sponsored school and industry-based programs, and to date, 100% of program graduates have been successfully employed in the industry, at high paid jobs. More than 50% of these graduates are continuing their education, while employed.

"BBEI turned me onto science," explained Damian Kirkland, a 1997 program graduate who is currently employed at Genentech Corp., and will be the emcee for the Oct. 8 program. Kirkland is a 1996 graduate of Berkeley High School Berkeley High School refers to the following high schools:

. "I learned so much through the BBEI courses and through my internship and co-op job experiences, that I felt very qualified for my position at Genentech."

Kirkland's supervisors agree. They call his performance on the job "awesome!"

The BBEI "Celebration of Science" dinner begins with a no-host bar at 6 p.m. on Oct. 8. Dinner and program begin at 7 p.m. The Lakeview Club is located at 300 Lakeside Drive, Oakland. For additional information and to confirm attendance, contact Fern Tiger at 510/763-3867. -0-
