Third-quarter results were compiled based on daily investment totals reported by VentureWire. The data provides an early view of venture capital investment trends in the quarter. Final investment numbers for the quarter will be available later this month, after the completion of an additional survey of venture capital investors. This survey typically yields an additional 10%-20% in venture capital investment, when the final numbers are tallied.

"The biotech and software industries continue to receive the most financing than any other sector," said Ken Andersen, managing editor of VentureWire. "The third-quarter data shows an investment pace on par with the first half of the year."

A total of 326 private venture capital financings To start an own company or to bring a new product to the market, the venture may need to attract financial funding. There are several categories of financing possibilities. If it is a small venture, then perhaps the venture can rely on family funding, loans from friends , based in the U.S., have awarded a preliminary $3.6 billion over the past three months. In the second quarter of 2003, venture-backed companies raised $4.0 billion through 502 financings. In the third quarter period, one-year ago, 476 companies raised $4.1 billion.

Following the pattern of the last three quarters, biotechnology attracted significantly more venture capital investment than any other sector, with 39 companies raising $911.5 million. The second-place sector, enterprise software, had more deals, with 52 companies raising funds, but the total capital raised was much less at $325 million. Semiconductor start-ups also had a strong quarter, with 26 companies raising $323 million.

Intel Capital was the most active venture investor in the third quarter, with 11 announced deals. New Enterprise Associates, Greylock and Matrix Partners each participated in nine venture investments. Overall, 30 venture firms made at least five investments in the third quarter.

"Despite the traditional slow-down in the summer quarter, investors turned in a solid performance in the third quarter," said Andersen. "This bodes well for a strong finish to the year and sets the stage for growth in 2004."
