EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

AMGEN AMGEN Applied Molecular Genetics (original meaning)  Inc. tops the Business Journal s list of locally based biotech/biomed companies. With 16,500 employees, it is far larger than No. 2 Diagnostic Products Corp., a medical test maker with 2,600 employees.

Private companies account for 15 firms on the list, though only two made the top 10. Privately held Discus Dental dental /den·tal/ (den´t'l) pertaining to a tooth or teeth.

It was FDA approved for the first time in September 2006, for the "the treatment of EGFR-expressing metastatic colorectal cancer with disease progression" . Co-developed by Amgen and Abgenix, panitumumab is the first fully human monoclonal antibody monoclonal antibody, an antibody that is mass produced in the laboratory from a single clone and that recognizes only one antigen. Monoclonal antibodies are typically made by fusing a normally short-lived, antibody-producing B cell (see immunity) to a fast-growing  that targets a protein that plays an important role in cancer.
