A precursor volume, published in 2001, investigated whether biological information should be included in social science research. The question pre-emptively answered in the affirmative by researchers on the ground, the papers here focus on what has been learned about the benefits and pitfalls of population-based sample surveys that combine demographic, social, and behavioral data with biological indicators. The first section reviews specific surveys and types of surveys as they were and are designed and carried out. The second considers genetic information; and the third suggests new ways of collecting data, applying it, and thinking about it.
