Biopic takes a nosedive; MOVIES.

Byline: DAVID EDWARDS

AMELIA Cert PG, 111mins *

Her aerial adventures made Amelia Earhart a celebrity and a protofeminist who inspired women the world over to start wearing trousers. This limp biopic bi·o·pic
n.
A film or television biography, often with fictionalized episodes.

biopic
Noun

Informal a film based on the life of a famous person [bio(graphical) + pic(ture)]
, on the other hand, may inspire you to reach for the air sickness bag.

The double Oscar-winning Hilary Swank plays the pioneering aviatrix a·vi·a·trix
n.
A woman who operates an aircraft; a woman pilot.

Noun 1. aviatrix - a woman aviator
airwoman, aviatress

aeronaut, airman, aviator, flier, flyer - someone who operates an aircraft
who we first come across during a 1937 attempt to become the first woman to pilot a plane around the world, aided by a trusty navigator (Christopher Ecclestone). We then flashback to the mid-20s as she meets and falls for publisher George Putnam (Richard Gere) who organises her first transatlantic flight. She then has an affair with tycoon Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor) before becoming a reluctant celebrity.

Even if you're unfamiliar with Earhart's story, there are few surprises here, making for an exceptionally dull journey. The message at the end - "Everyone has oceans to fly, as long as you have the heart to do it" - may have you clawing for the exit.
