Biopharmaceutical Contract Manufacturers: Gearing Up for Increased Outsourcing.

MORAGA, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Oct. 28, 1998--Outsourcing of biopharmaceutical manufacturing is gaining in popularity, whether or not a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company has in-house capability.

Biotech companies need to be fast and flexible, and outsourcing is an important part of this flexibility. Some of the large pharmaceutical companies are making strategic shifts away from full integration, moving toward more outsourcing for lower costs, to gain access to expertise and capacity, or to shorten the time to market.

Considering the unique requirements for the production of biopharmaceuticals and the cost of building and maintaining capacity, it is no wonder that outsourcing is becoming an important manufacturing strategy.

Today, the majority of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies are outsourcing at least part of their analytical lab or manufacturing requirements.

This year, an important collaboration was announced between Eli Lilly and Company Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) is a global pharmaceutical company and one of the world's largest corporations. Eli Lilly's global headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the United States.  and the LONZA Group Lonza Group is a Swiss chemicals and biotechnology company, headquartered in Basel. The firm provides a number of products and services to the pharmaceutical and life science industries, including organic fine and performance chemicals, custom manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals,  to develop and manufacture Activated Protein C (APC (1) (American Power Conversion Corporation, West Kingston, RI, www.apcc.com) The leading manufacturer of UPS systems and surge suppressors, founded in 1981 by Rodger Dowdell, Neil Rasmussen and Emanual Landsman, three electronic power engineers who had worked at MIT. ). Manufacturing proteins such as APC on a large scale can be complex and costly. The announcement from Eli Lilly Eli Lilly can refer to:
