(OTCBB OTCBB See OTC Bulletin Board (OTCBB). :BIPH BIPH Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology (National Academy of Sciences; Ukraine) ), a developer of solutions for both safety and image compatibility under Magnetic Resonance Imaging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), noninvasive diagnostic technique that uses nuclear magnetic resonance to produce cross-sectional images of organs and other internal body structures. (MRI 1. (application) MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging. 2. MRI - Measurement Requirements and Interface. ), today announced the results of recent testing of one of the technologies it is developing to make implantable devices (such as pacemakers), their metal wire leads, and other metal objects used in surgical procedures, safe in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) environment. Currently, MRI examination is difficult to obtain for individuals who have implanted pacemakers and similar devices. This is due to the potential for heating associated with tissue damage. Pacemaker patients are also subject to rapid heartbeat in an MRI device as a result of induced voltages in the pacing lead. Consequently, MRI imaging centers today generally refuse to allow pacemaker patients, and those with other implanted medical devices, to undergo an MRI examination. There are also limitations placed on devices that could otherwise be useful in surgical procedures guided by MRI. Two tests of Biophan's technologies were recently conducted in active MRI imaging systems at imaging centers located in Western New York
Western New York refers to the westernmost region of New York State. . Graphs attached below reflect the data from these tests. The first graph below depicts the results of the first test, showing the reduction of thermal heating caused by an MRI machine on a metal wire similar to a pacing lead that is protected by one of Biophan's MRI technologies. The control sample heated over 22 degrees Centigrade centigrade /cen·ti·grade/ (sen´ti-grad) having 100 gradations (steps or degrees); see under scale. cen·ti·grade adj. Celsius. in less than one minute. With the Biophan technology added, the heating was reduced to about 1 degree Centigrade, below the level that can cause tissue damage and well within FDA FDA abbr. The second chart depicts the results of the second test showing a reduction of 89% in the electrical energy induced in a metal object by the MRI radio frequency field after Biophan MRI safety technology is added to the sample. Biophan's business objective is to develop and license to medical device manufacturers technologies that will make implantable devices (such as pacemakers) and metal objects used in surgical procedures safe in a MRI environment. Biophan is currently exploring licensing arrangements with several major manufacturers of medical devices. About Biophan Technologies: Biophan, based in Rochester, New York This article is about the city of Rochester in Monroe County. For the town in Ulster County, see Rochester, Ulster County, New York. Rochester, once known as The Flour City, and more recently as The Flower City or , is engaged in designing, developing, and marketing new technology and related products to enable cardiac pacemakers and the other life sustaining medical devices to be safe and compatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other equipment using magnetic fields magnetic fields, n.pl the spaces in which magnetic forces are detectable; created by magnetostrictive ultrasonic scalers to cause the tips of instruments such as ultrasonic scalers to vibrate. and radio waves Radio waves Electromagnetic energy of the frequency range corresponding to that used in radio communications, usually 10,000 cycles per second to 300 billion cycles per second. . This MRI safe and compatible technology will be utilized in temporary and implantable pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and other medical equipment.
