: BMOD) of Albuquerque, N.M., developer of early lung cancer detection testing and other cancer diagnostic technology, announced today that it has signed an agreement to exclusively license cancer detection technology from Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Biomoda's cancer detection technology is based on a patented porphyrin application that preferentially binds to cancerous or aberrant cells, which are non-invasively collected from lung sputum sputum /spu·tum/ (spu´tum) [L.] expectoration; matter ejected from the trachea, bronchi, and lungs through the mouth.

Lung cancer claims more lives than any other cancer. An estimated 162,460 deaths from lung cancer will occur in the United States during 2006. The expected five year survival rate for all patients combined in whom lung cancer is diagnosed is 15 percent and by contrast, the five year survival rate for cases detected when the disease is still localized is 50 percent. At the present time, only 16 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at this early stage.
