Biometric tracking systems selects Identix TouchSafe II for DOD test of new military personnel rescue program; digitized records speed field verification, maximize security.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 1997--Identix Inc. (ASE:IDX), a leader worldwide in biometric verification systems and live-scan systems for law enforcement, Tuesday announced that North Kansas City, Mo.-based Biometric Tracking L.L.C. (BTL) has purchased 10 Identix TouchSafe II units as the fingerprint capture component of a new BTL data software package to be evaluated by the Department of Defense (DOD).

The system would electronically replace the current paper-and-ink files, called ISOPREP (ISOlated Personnel REPort), maintained for all military personnel entering high-risk areas and used for verification in a rescue mission if an individual is shot down or otherwise separated from his or her unit. The file contains personal information used to verify that individual's identity.

If the evaluation, to be done under field conditions in ten separate global locations designated as high-risk sectors, is successful and budgeting permits, BTL and Identix believe that additional units could be used at various other military bases for personnel enrollment.

According to Major John Whisenhunt of the Joint Services Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) Agency, known as JSSA, the digitized version of the ISOPREP would, if successful, provide better file maintenance and security, as well as faster transmission from home base to the theater of operations. Major Whisenhunt added that the improved accuracy -- especially in fingerprinting -- would result in measurable time savings to operations personnel. He said that JSSA is testing the digital ISOPREP on behalf of all the services.
