An interdisciplinary field in which the principles, laws, and techniques of engineering, physics, chemistry, and other physical sciences are applied to facilitate progress in medicine, biology, and other life sciences.
. Since its inception in 1975, the foundation has awarded more than $524 million to colleges and universities for faculty research, graduate fellowships, and program development.

The Biomedical Engineering Research Grants program supports research projects that enable investigators to establish academic careers in biomedical engineering or a closely related field. The foundation invites applications from principal investigators Noun 1. principal investigator - the scientist in charge of an experiment or research project

. Supported investigators must apply or develop substantive engineering methods and techniques in projects that address important medical problems. By itself, the routine use of complex instrumentation or conventional engineering methods is insufficient to qualify for funding. The maximum initial award is $240,000 over three years.

Consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of biomedical engineering research, applicants with traditional engineering backgrounds should develop appropriate and credible collaborations with colleagues in the life sciences and medicine. Conversely con·verse 1
