The web-based survey was conducted by Science Careers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), private organization devoted to furthering the work of scientists and improving the effectiveness of science in the promotion of human welfare.  (AAAS AAAS American Association for the Advancement of Science. ) from May 2 to June 4, 2006. Participants in the survey included Science readers and subscribers, as well as individuals working in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Respondents named the companies they considered the best, average and worst employers. Senn-Delaney Culture Diagnostics and Measurement (SDCDM), commissioned by Science to conduct and interpret the survey results, used a mathematical process to determine the attributes with the greatest driving impact on company/employer reputation. Companies received a unique ranking score, derived from the ratings of these attributes.

Companies were rated without regard to their size or the number of votes each received, and ranked based on 42 attributes in seven categories: Corporate Image, Leadership and Direction, Financial Prowess, Work/Culture Environment, Work/Life Balance, Academics and Collegial col·le·gi·al
