BioSeparations Inc. Receives Phase II SBIR Grant.

TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1998--BioSeparations Inc., Tuesday announced the receipt of a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health to support the continued development of the firm's investigational CFS CFS

(TM) (Charge Flow Separation) instrumentation for the isolation of fetal cells from maternal blood during pregnancy.

The Phase II grant allows the company to expand its CFS development project to complete beta testing and future clinical trial objectives. Dr. Stephen Wachtel, chief of research, Reproductive Genetics Laboratory at the University of Tennessee The University of Tennessee (UT), sometimes called the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UT Knoxville or UTK), is the flagship institution of the statewide land-grant University of Tennessee public university system in the American state of Tennessee.  will be participating in the external validation testing.

The Phase I data demonstrated that CFS can recover fetal cells from maternal circulation, and that the recovered cells can be used for prenatal diagnosis. The Phase II grant is designed to optimize the enrichment of fetal nucleated nucleated /nu·cle·at·ed/ (noo´kle-at?id) having a nucleus or nuclei.

The CFS instrument is a computer-controlled fluid flow electrophoretic system with easy-to-use software that automates the instrument's function. The CFS process produces fetal cells for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis using fluorescence in situ hybridization Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)
A technique for diagnosing DiGeorge syndrome before birth by analyzing cells obtained by amniocentesis with DNA probes. FISH is about 95% accurate.

BioSeparations Inc. also manufactures and markets ChromaHyb(TM), a unique line of universal fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) buffers compatible with DNA probes to label chromosomes for the detection of genetic abnormalities.

The unique chemistry of ChromaHyb buffers is an integrated component of the proprietary instrument systems and software programs the company has under development for the isolation and visualization of rare cells. These product lines have broad application in established and emerging genetic research and diagnostics markets.
