Leading international experts on disaster preparedness and response will gather May 12, 2003 to discuss how to prepare for and react to a major biological, chemical or nuclear attack. "Mass casualty events (MCEs) carry the potential to have an over-burdening effect on the entire public health community, as well as the surrounding industries which support it," said Dr. Susan Briggs, director of Harvard Medical International's Trauma and Disaster Institute and moderator of the Boston workshop. "Those of us in leadership positions hold a responsibility to the public we serve to make certain well thought-out plans are in place to respond to such tragedies."

Dr. Briggs' team of experts, including Kathryn H. Brinsfield, MD, MPH, FACEP FACEP Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians ; Edward E. George, MD, PhD; and Richard D. Zane, MD will deliver a targeted discussion on "Preparation and Response to Civilian Disasters Stemming from Biological, Chemical, or Nuclear Events." The agenda will include a detailed presentation on:

-- The Role of Incident Command Systems in Disaster Planning and

-- Hospital Preparedness and Response to Weapons of Mass

Destruction

-- Coordination of Covering Response and Integration of Federal

Dr. Briggs, who helped direct on-the-scene trauma care at the site of the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001, is also the editor of the soon-to-be-published "Advanced Disaster Medical Response," a training manual for providers.
