) has allowed claims in a new patent entitled "Method of Manufacturing Therapeutic Calcium Phosphate Particles" (European Patent No. 1150918) for the manufacturing process of the company's unique calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CAP). This new patent names BioSante scientists as inventors and is solely owned by BioSante.

The EPO patent covers BioSante's proprietary manufacturing process for its CAP nanoparticles, including its manufacture with antigens for vaccines and therapeutic proteins for drug delivery. The company was awarded a patent on the manufacturing process and biomedical bi·o·med·i·cal

uses for its CAP nanoparticles in the United States in 2002. BioSante continues to pursue patent protection both in the United States and abroad on various applications of its CAP nanoparticles.

"The EPO patent significantly expands the intellectual property protection of our exclusive CAP nanotechnology," said Stephen M. Simes, president and chief executive officer of BioSante. "CAP continues to demonstrate both its potential as a novel and versatile therapeutic drug delivery system, especially for protein and peptide drugs, as well as a vaccine adjuvant adjuvant /ad·ju·vant/ (aj?dbobr-vant) (a-joo´vant)

and delivery system. The technology is expected to play a valuable role in a wide range of preventive and therapeutic medical applications, including the area of non-injected biodefense vaccines."

BioSante's CAP nanotechnology consists of microscopic particles of specially formulated calcium phosphate, similar to that found in teeth and bones. BioSante is developing CAP for a growing range of applications, including its use as a safer, biocompatible biocompatible /bio·com·pat·i·ble/ (-kom-pat´i-b'l) being harmonious with life; not having toxic or injurious effects on biological function.  and biodegradable alternative to aluminum salts as a vaccine adjuvant to enhance the immunogenicity immunogenicity /im·mu·no·ge·nic·i·ty/ (-je-nis´it-e) the property enabling a substance to provoke an immune response, or the degree to which a substance possesses this property.  and corresponding effectiveness of vaccines.

"BioSante is working with the U.S. Navy, Army and Department of Defense to develop non-injected vaccines to protect against malaria and bioterror agents such as anthrax and ricin ricin /ri·cin/ (ri´sin) a phytotoxin in the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis), used in the synthesis of immunotoxins.
