Philip Strauss, BioSafe's chairman, president, and chief executive officer. He said, "Using BioSafe's patented landfill remodeling process, we will basically recycle the South Hadley landfill and create approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of new capacity for future disposal."

The town of South Hadley was facing a multi-million dollar cost from the mandated closure of its 30-acre unlined landfill, and it selected BioSafe to provide the town with an alternative to the landfill's closure. In a landfill remodeling project, BioSafe recovers up to 80 percent of the previously used space at the landfill, while converting the landfill into an environmentally sound facility with liners, leachate leach·ate

collection systems and gas migration controls. The company then generates revenues from the receipt of tipping fees for disposal in the newly created space.

"The feasibility study represents a critical step in characterizing the waste in the landfill and in obtaining the necessary permits to move forward with the actual remodeling process," said Strauss. Following completion of the feasibility study, the company expects to begin remodeling the South Hadley landfill and anticipates accepting waste there in the first 6-acre lined cell by the end of 1998.

"With other landfills in western Massachusetts closing down, the remodeled South Hadley landfill will provide a much-needed disposal option in the region," according to Strauss. To ensure a long-term waste flow into the South Hadley landfill, BioSafe plans to begin developing an integrated solid waste management operation in the surrounding area. -0-
