"The waste from this new contract will help us achieve our objective of 250 tons per day at the Moretown landfill until the company receives its permit to operate the next cell there," Strauss said. Under the contract, BioSafe's Moretown landfill will receive approximately 23,000 tons of sludge from the Chittenden Solid Waste District during the period from March 31, 1997, to June 30, 1998. In addition, BioSafe will be responsible for transporting the sludge from the District's special waste processing facility to the Moretown landfill.

The Moretown landfill is a state-of-the-art solid waste management facility, with a double-liner system to protect the groundwater and with other measures to safeguard the environment. The landfill is located on a 200-acre parcel that is adjacent to Route 2 and within a 30-minute drive of Vermont's two largest population centers, Burlington and Montpelier-Barre. The Chittenden Solid Waste District has 12 member communities including Burlington. Once BioSafe receives the permit to operate the next cell at the landfill, the company expects to increase the landfill's operating level to an average of 350 tons per day.
