Business Editors & Health/Medical Writers

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--May 9, 2001

Dr. Ricardo Moro, president and Dr. Gerald Wittenberg, chairman are pleased to announce the members of BioCurex's Scientific Advisory Board.

Phil Gold, C.C., O.Q., M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Gold attended McGill University where he obtained four degrees. His Ph.D.degree thesis title was "Carcinoembryonic Antigens (CEA CEA carcinoembryonic antigen.

The essay for CEA developed by Gold, has become the most used marker for human cancer diagnosis and monitoring. Most recently, in experimental attempts to eradicate tumors with monoclonals, anti-CEA antibodies have been used as a homing device for cancer cell cytotoxic agents.

In recognition of the scientific contributions made by Gold, he has been the recipient of numerous international awards and honors that are too numerous to mention here. He currently is the physician-in-chief, department of medicine at The Montreal General Hospital The Montreal General Hospital is a hospital in Montreal, Canada, first established on May 1, 1819 and an early teaching hospital. The hospital has moved several times in the past, and is currently situated on Mount Royal, at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Cote des Neiges ; Douglas G. Cameron, professor of medicine, McGill University; professor, departments of physiology and oncology, McGill University and the director of the McGill University Medical Clinic at the Montreal General Hospital.

Dr. Garri Abelev Ph.D., M.D.

In 1963, Dr. Abelev and his colleagues first described the association between alfa-fetoprotein (AFP) and liver cancer Liver Cancer Definition

Liver cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer but has a high mortality rate. Liver cancers can be classified into two types.
. This was the first cancer marker of clinical use ever reported. His work launched the entire field of tumor markers into the multi-billion dollar industry it is today and he is considered the dean of the cancer marker community. Abelev has contributed in very significant ways to the understanding of the functions of AFP. He continues his work in a very active way in his laboratory at the Cancer Research Center, immunochemistry Immunochemistry

A discipline concerned both with the structure of antibody (immunoglobulin) molecules and with their ability to bind an apparently limitless number of diverse chemical structures (antigens); with the structure, organization, and rearrangement

Jose Uriel, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Uriel has worked at the Pasteur Institute and was research director of the prestigious CNRS CNRS Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research, France)
CNRS Centro Nacional de Referencia Para El Sida (Argentinean National Reference Center for Aids)
. He also worked at the Laboratory of Immunology, NIH "Not invented here." See digispeak.

Bethesda, Md. From 1963 to 1995, he directed the laboratory of protein chemistry at the French Research Cancer Institute of which he was later the director.

In 1970 he received the prestigious Rosen Award in cancer research and in 1972 became laureate of the French National Academy of Medicine (Leon Berat Prize). Uriel has published more than 220 scientific papers and written several chapters in books related to cancer research. Uriel has made major contributions to the understanding of the physiology of AFP and cancer markers.

Maria Jose Villacampa, Ph.D.

Dr. Villacampa is a full professor at the department of biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology at the University of Zaragoza Founded in 1542, it is one of the oldest universities in the world with over 40,000 students in its 22 faculties and ranks among the top public universities in Europe.Situated in the heart of Aragon, the University of Zaragoza is the only public university in the region, which means it is  in Spain. She was part of the team which initially characterized RECAF and has published a significant number of papers related to the different aspects of this molecule in collaborations with Uriel and Moro.

Taiki Tamaoki, Ph.D.

Dr. Tamaoki obtained his degree in 1960 at the University of Wisconsin. He moved to the University of Alberta, cancer research unit where he worked as associate professor and then faculty professor at the University of Calgary. He held positions as research associate of the National Cancer Institute of Canada and at Terry Fox Cancer Research Institute. Tamaoki is a molecular biologist and it was in his laboratory that alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was cloned for the first time. His paper was published in the prestigious journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, usually referred to as PNAS, is the official journal of the United States National Academy of Sciences. . He is regarded as the worldwide authority in AFP structure.

Elliot Alpert Ph.D.

Dr. Alpert is one of the pioneers in the field of AFP and cancer markers. He has made significant contributions to this field. A member of the New York Academy of Sciences The New York Academy of Sciences is the third oldest scientific society in the United States. An independent, non-profit organization with more than 25,000 members in 140 countries, the Academy’s mission is to advance understanding of science and technology. , Alpert is in charge of the workshop for evaluation of cancer markers for the International Society of Onco developmental biology and medicine.

Michel Sadelain, M.D., Ph.D.

in the United States. The laboratory he manages is actively involved in genetic engineering applied to the immune system, a combination of fields that will prove valuable for future work on RECAF. Sadelain has previously worked together with Moro using RECAF in experiments showing complete abrogation The destruction or annulling of a former law by an act of the legislative power, by constitutional authority, or by usage. It stands opposed to rogation; and is distinguished from derogation, which implies the taking away of only some part of a law; from Subrogation,  of tumor growth in animal models.

"We are very pleased to have these highly respected scientists guide BioCurex Inc. in its mission to become an integrated biotechnology company with expertise in cancer diagnostics, imaging and therapeutics. Their contributions have been significant and we look forward to their further input in the development of our RECAF technology," said Wittenberg.

BioCurex Technologies Inc. is a biotechnology company that has developed patented/proprietary technology in the areas of cancer diagnosis, tumor imaging and therapeutics.

The technology identifies a universal cancer biomarker or receptor known as RECAF, thereby allowing detection of malignant cancers from blood tests or tissue biopsies. The cancer diagnostics market is presently estimated at $4 billion. The technology can also be used to image the location of the cancer and improve the present detection systems.

Accurate and timely diagnosis is the vital first stem in managing cancer and it is projected that BioCurex can obtain a leadership position in the screening, diagnosis and imaging of cancer. Initial results indicate that this technology can detect more than 90% of all cancers in blood or tissue samples.
