Bio-centre partners; Hope for new treatments.

Byline: BY SOPHIE FREEMAN Business Staff

CANCER, asthma and allergies could all find new treatments on Merseyside after a major deal was signed by the operators of the National Biomanufacturing Centre in Speke.

Eden Biodesign has teamed up with SR Pharma, a European biopharmaceutical firm, to aid in its product development and manufacturing.

Eden was appointed as operator of the pounds 34m centre, which is due to open early next year, tasked with making it Europe's leading biopharmaceutical design base.

The government-funded centre is part of a regional plan to make the North West one of the foremost areas for biomanufacturing in Europe.

SR Pharma will be the first client to move into the National Biomanufacturing Centre. Crawford Brown, chief executive of Eden Biodesign, said: "We are convinced we will be able to add substantial clinical and commercial value to SR Pharma's products."

Mr Brown said that Eden would provide a significant level of clinical development consultancy for SR.

"This agreement demonstrates that Eden Biodesign is more than simply a contract manufacturing organisation," he said.

Melvyn Davies, chief financial officer of SR Pharma, said: "This agreement is an important step forward for SR Pharma in accessing the relevant specialist expertise needed to assist in the product development and manufacturing.

"We've worked with Eden before and they've given us some advice about our technology.

"Now, since picking up the National Biomanufacturing Centre contract, they can offer more services and greater facilities."
