Data from an ongoing, open label clinical study on the effect of oxandrolone on weight, lean tissue, performance status and quality of life scores in cancer-related weight loss will be presented on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, as part of a session on cachexia cachexia /ca·chex·ia/ (kah-kek´se-ah) a profound and marked state of constitutional disorder; general ill health and malnutrition.  from 9:30 am - 11:30 am. The session will be chaired by Charles Loprinzi, M.D., and Aminah Jatoi, M.D., both of the Mayo Clinic.

Oxandrolone is a synthetic derivative of testosterone indicated as adjunctive therapy to promote weight gain after weight loss following extensive surgery, chronic infections, or severe trauma, and in some patients who without definite pathophysiologic reasons fail to gain or to maintain normal weight, to offset the protein catabolism associated with prolonged administration of corticosteroids, and for the relief of the bone pain frequently accompanying osteoporosis.
