The "Paws for the Cause" campaign is a partnership between Bio-Medical Services and veterinarians to increase the number of pets who are properly diagnosed and treated for allergies.

The first component of the campaign includes a comprehensive survey to veterinarians. The purpose of the survey is to better understand the needs of veterinarians and animal clinics regarding pet allergies. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to provide veterinarians with the necessary tools to educate pet owners that pet allergies exist, and to inform pet owners of testing and treatment options.

"Our veterinary clients have reported that up to 1 in 4 dogs seen in their clinics are treated for allergies. With this increase in frequency of pet allergies, we felt it was necessary to support the veterinary community by helping to educate the pet owner population," said Dr. Susan Keesee, president and chief scientific officer for Bio-Medical Services. "We wanted to launch this campaign to help us understand what our veterinary partners are seeing in terms of pets with allergies, as well as to provide the best tools and resources to help the veterinary community to properly diagnose and treat allergic al·ler·gic

Studies suggest that human allergies have nearly quadrupled since 1980. Pet allergies appear to be on the rise, in concert with human allergies. Approximately 20 percent of all dogs suffer from some sort of allergy and the number is rising.

Keesee continued, "The ultimate goal of the survey and this campaign is to create the ACTT Guide to Allergies and Immunotherapy, a detailed clinic reference guide which we hope will become a useful resource for all veterinarians and clinic staff to better meet the needs of their allergic pet population."

The "Paws for the Cause" of Pet Allergies Campaign runs through May 30, 2008. "The ACTT Guide to Allergies and Immunotherapy" is scheduled to be published in early 2009.
