The latest and most accurate data available is from 1993 and was just published in a report in this week's journal Science.

Study author, Philip Rosenberg, of the National Cancer Institute forecasts a bleak future if this trend continues, suggesting that "the threat of AIDS may become a rite of passage rite of passage

" for young people. This latest report reaffirms the government's warning that AIDS is threatening more and more young people.

In January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center.  announced that AIDS in 1993 became the number one killer for people in the age group from 25 through 44.

Rosenberg's study counters the optimism expressed in the government's recent announcement that AIDS appears to have leveled off, with 40,000 new infections every year balanced by 40,000 new deaths. This apparent plateau is really a disguise for the increased risk facing young Americans.

It is a fact that only young Caucasian men have seen a drop in new infections in recent years, while the risk has dramatically increased for young minorities and women.

Cornelius Baker of the National Association of People with AIDS The People With AIDS (PWA) Self-Empowerment Movement was a movement of those diagnosed with AIDS and grew out of San Francisco. The PWA Self-Empowerment Movement believes that those diagnosed as having AIDS should "take charge of their own life, illness, and care, and to minimize  underscored the meaning of the most recent report on prevalence of HIV, when he stated that, "I don't think most people really get it, that (infection) is a potential for them...We have to be clear: Right now...if you get HIV in your twenties, you will die by around forty years old."

In order to contain the continued spread of HIV, we must have more eduction e·duce

and improved testing capabilities. It is important to remember, that once a person is infected, and that person remains in ignorance of that infection, HIV is spreading by continued practice of the behavior(s) which exposed that individual in the first place.

BFTI's Mehica GP120 Detector system, when combined with current thrusts to improve public health eduction will provide the opportunity for the earliest possible detection, literally within days of a person becoming infected. The Mehica GP120 Detector system, for the first time, provides a chance to cut that all-important window of ignorance and continued spread of HIV from weeks to a few days.
