RECENTLY a lady wrote that she saw a man picking food from a waste bin and wondered whether it was due to the hard times we're going through.

I am in the habit of picking up polystyrene containers with half-eaten takeaways in them. I put them in a plastic bag and give them to my neighbour who has two dogs and is finding it expensive to feed them.

I also pick up vegetable leaves, carrots, etc, after market days. These are also of help to my neighbour's rabbit.

Perhaps the gentleman this lady saw was myself. Thankfully I'm quite well fed and don't need her to buy me a meal. F HARRISON, Stockton
